If you’re a digital nomad, or traveling indefinitely, then at some point you will probably visit a country which requires you to have an onward flight to validate your entry visa.
Countries that are very strict with requiring proof of onward travel are: Peru, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Philippines, Indonesia, and Brazil.
Proof of onward travel is a problem if you don’t have a set itinerary and concrete onward plans. Some of the countries who are strict about requiring proof will paradoxically allow you to extend your visa after you have entered the country, but make it really difficult to obtain a long stay visa beforehand.
Previously, the only way around this was to either buy the cheapest possible outbound flight and just miss it, or to book your flight and change it at a later date.
Both options are annoying and expensive.
Thankfully, there is a third (and much cheaper) option with this travel hack!
Flyonward is a new company offering a ‘rent a ticket’ service. Enter your details on their site and they’ll book you a flight to a random destination — looks like I’m going to Tokyo ;).
I wasn’t sure if it would work or not, but seeing as it’s only $10 I decided to risk trying it. If it failed and I ended up having to buy an outgoing ticket at the airport, oh well.
I had to show my onward ticket two times. I got straight through without any trouble when I was departing Sydney and when I was arriving in Manila.
Tickets obtained through Flyonward must be used within 48 hours. Their website states that they can offer quotes for tickets that need to be valid for longer than 48 hours.
Flyonward’s service works by actually booking you a real flight. Later on, the flight is canceled and refunded. Because of this, at the time of entry, you have completely legitimate travel plans!
It works like a charm!
